Description

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this delightful miniature table screen from the latter part of the Meiji period ( circa 1900) the two fold screen is formed from two thick cuts of Elephant ivory housed inside a polychromed ivory frame , the panels open up to reveal a continuous scene on each side , the front is carved in low relief and depicts a family and children at play, one child clearly seen playing a game involving a blindfold , the incredibly well carved detailing further picked out in Polychrome staining , the reverse of the screen is carved in Intaglio to depict a charming lakeside scene with Egrets amidst water Lilies , each of the lower panels are pierced in a stylised design and give the appearance of being supported by Bamboo supports, a super piece of Japanese art from the Meiji era .

The condition is great , with no warps or splits to the two ivory panels, and only a couple of minor stable hairlines to the top of the frame !!
