This Victorian photograph frame dates from 1880 and comes from the London retailer Thornhill & Co. The rectangular accessory has a polished bronze body paired with an inner band of cognac brown crocodile leather displaying a glossy patina and a textured scale pattern. The outer border consists of intricate openwork bronze filigree scrollwork, while a simple polished bronze moulding edges the central aperture, which holds glass over a neutral grey backing fabric. The easel-backed frame measures 28 cm high, 17 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. Suitable for a gentleman's library or office desk, the piece stands upright on a flat surface to display a portrait photograph. The original folding easel stand sits on the reverse alongside the retailer signature. The frame suits traditional domestic interiors and workspace settings, serving as a functional accessory for desk or tabletop display.

Late 19th-century Victorian photograph frames often incorporated mixed materials such as polished metals, bronze, and exotic leathers like crocodile or alligator hide. These decorative items featured elaborate filigree, scrollwork, or engine-turned borders designed to display cabinet cards and portrait photography on desks or tables.

High-end antique photograph frames typically utilised cast or stamped bronze, brass, sterling silver, alongside exotic hides, tortoiseshell, and velvet. Intricate pierced metal filigree borders were frequently overlaid onto textured leather surfaces for visual contrast.

Authentic period frames usually feature original easel backs secured with historical fixings, hand-fitted metal mounts, and natural age-related patination. Genuine leather exhibits irregular scale patterns and slight wear along exposed edges rather than modern uniform synthetic embossing.

Position the frame on a dark wood desk, console table, or bookshelf alongside brass decorative accents and leather-bound volumes. Combining textured leather and polished bronze creates tactile contrast when styled alongside modern minimalist furniture or traditional dark wood interiors.

Dust the intricate metalwork gently using a dry camel-hair brush to prevent debris accumulation in the filigree. Avoid liquid polishes or aggressive chemicals on the leather, applying only specialised leather conditioner sparingly with a microfibre cloth to retain flexibility.
