Victorian Miniature Portrait Of A Young Man In A Red Leather And Velvet Lined Carrying Case With Two Brass Hooks

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Gertrude Antiques

A very well executed miniature portrait of a young man in Victorian dress, possibly a clergyman. The portrait itself is in excellent condition. It is contained within a slightly battered red leather carrying case lined with red velvet. This charming little red leather case is fastened by two rotating brass hooks with brass eyes.

The little carrying case has evidently been opened many times – presumably for the romantic reason that the receiver of this miniature portrait was wont to open the carrying case so that she could gaze upon her beloved. If he was a clergyman then he would have been the younger son of a substantial family, and presumably she (the viewer) would have been imagining her future life in a grand Vicarage or Rectory.
