Victorian Royal Regiment of Artillery Officer's Full Dress Gold Threaded Sabretache Mounted on a Mahogany Polescreen

19th century
Description

The Sabretache is of a beautiful standard pattern with gold train lace enclosing a blue cloth face bearing the gold embroidered Royal Coat of Arms, a scroll below showing “'Ubique” (which is part of the Royal Artillery’s Latin motto meaning “Everywhere” - referring to the fact that the Royal Artillery are deployed wherever in the world that the British Army is fighting), oak-leaf sprays, a gilt metal cannon of post 1874 pattern and at the bottom a tri-part gold thread scroll, “Quo Fas Et Gloria Ducunt” which translates as “Where Right and Glory Lead”.

Today, the Officers of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery still carry identical Sabretaches when firing royal salutes or on parade at The Trooping of the Colour in London.

This glorious Sabretache has been framed in mahogany and then mounted on a screw slide on a polished Mahogany Pole with a Mahogany Circular Stand. It is in the same tradition as the pole screens that began to appear in the 18th century. Pole screens are small screens placed on a vertical pole which is mounted on a tripod or base. These are placed between a lit fire and an occupant of the room, and the screen can be adjusted up or down to shield the person's face from the heat.

This magnificent Sabretache Polescreen is in very good condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
