An 18th C Japanese IVory Fat Sparrow Netsuke Signed Genko

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art

As part of our oriental collection we are delihted to offer this 18th century Japanese ivory netsuke signed by an artist called Genko and recorded as being the carver of this subject , often refered to as the tongue cut sparrow and because in folklore an old Japanese lady once cut the tongue from a sparrow and released it into the forest , well this poor old soul looks like someone has cut his tail and wing feathers many years ago ? he is however a chunky and tactile antique netsuke that has developed a pleasing patination, and a charm that a collector will love at an affordable price for what would have been a very expensive signed bird if perfect.
