As part of our oriental collection we are delighted to offer this wonderful Japanese Gold lacquer plaque in its period black lacquer tomobako , the plaque is formed as an outsized tsuba and decorated in fine shibayama detailing , the front has a humerous scene of Shoki the demon queller looking over an oni , the reverse has the more traditional tranquil garden scenes together with the artists signature ''NEMOTO''in a mother of pearl seal , the outer edge is protected with arim of silver further decorated with enamel floral detail, the artist in question was a very well known for producing high quality gold lacquer and shibayama works of art in the late 19th century.For a similar example by the same artist see The Nasser D Khalili Collection of Japanese art , Lacquer part II , Plate 160 .The condition is remarkable with no losses to the shibayama detailing , as with the Khalili example you will note minimal dark spots where the gold lacquer meets the silver outer band , overall ...
