Edo Period Japanese Boxwood Netsuke Signed Hachigyoku

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art

As part of our oriental collection we are delighted to offer this very early Japanese boxwood netsuke signed by an artist called Hachigyoku , the lovely colour and feel to this netsuke are more evident when handling the item , it depicts Kanu standing upright and stroking his beard whilst holding a sword in the other hand , it is nicely signed to the rear beside the himotoshi , we have tracked a netsuke artist of this name to the late 17th early 18th century in which case this would be a rare survivor ? for the avoidance of doubt we will sell him as 18thc and let the experts decide !

The condition is lovely , great original colour and patination , we have noted a very faint and very old line to the underside of his right foot , this may be a very old repair or a fissure in the wood , it is neglible but worth noting .
