An Impressive and Original 'Schweppes High Class Mineral Waters' Advertising Mirror with Original Frame.

This large and decoratively engraved Schweppes advertising mirror dates to the 1930's - 1940's and is in excellent condition - showing only minor areas of wear to the verre eglomise borders. The original fixing holes are still visible as are traces of original 'pub' varnish and paint to the pitch pine frame.

All the decoration has been achieved by working on the reverse of the glass with the beautiful engraving enhanced by application of gold leaf.

There has been no restoration carried out to the frame or the mirrored glass.

An early form of tempered hardboard is fixed to the back - tempered hardboard was first introduced in the 1940's and the corrosion of the fixings would suggest it was applied at approximately this time.

Schweppes is the real pioneer of the fizzy drink. In 1783 a young Swiss watchmaker and keen amateur scientist, Jacob Schweppe, became the first person to perfect an economical process for making carbonated mineral water, much loved by the gentry and widely administered by doctors to cure indigestion and gout.

He founded Schweppes in Geneva the same year but within seven years had expanded into England with a factory in Drury Lane, London. The company introduced fizzy lemonade in 1831, the success of which led to a flood of other flavoured fizzy drinks.
