As part of our oriental collection we are delighted to offer for sale this great Japanese ivory netsuke of a recumbent oxen with attendent , so typical of the netsuke produced by the renowned 18th century carver Tomotada ,the oxen lays with all fours beneath his body,he is tethered through a ring in his nose and the young attendant holds the beasts horns for security , the beast has inset horn eyes and fine stained and carved detail throughout , the underside is signed tomotada in a seal and has large and small himotoshi in 18th century fashion , Tomotada was possbly the most copied of all netsuke artists and these 19th century netsuke are sold in the main as "Tomotada school" which is how we are selling this one .

Again from the same private collection as our newly listed netsuke , the condition is great with no obvious signs of damage or repair , a few old hairlines to be expected and as you will see from the pictures a lovely mellow honey colour to the ivory.

A must have subject for any netsuke collector !
