Pair of 19th Century 'Pulham's Terra Cotta' Urns

19th century
Sold by Culvertons
Description

Elegant pair of lobed 19th century terracotta urns - manufactured by James Pulham & sons.

The firm was founded by James Pulham in the early part of the 19th century. The company became reknowned for creating a wide range of artificial landscapes and architectural ornamentation. The victorians had a passion for travel, gardening and plant collecting and James Pulham had the forsight to supply all that was needed to recreate exotic vistas nearer to home.

Winning medals at the Great Exhibition of 1851, International Exhibition of 1862 and prominent commissions throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries assured Pulhams success until its closure in 1920.

Having sustained approximately 150 years of english weather the urns are remarkably robust and intact. However, a tip from one of the handles is now missing and there are a number of minor chips to the rims, bases and bodies.

Originally the urns would have seperated into two parts. This is still achievable with one of the pair but the other is now in one piece - the removal of a small amount of cement would rectify this and can be done before delivery if so required.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
