Lovely Quality Large Japanese Ivory Okimono Turtle Catcher Meiji Period 1868-1912

Description

As part of our oriental collection we are delighted to be able to offer to the market this large fine quality Japanese ivory okimono of a turtle fisherman , carved from one piece of ivory as all good okimono are ,the okimono depicts a peasant type character going about his daily business , he appears to be catching turtles or terrapin and doing his best to keep them in his wicker basket , he stands on a rocky outcrop and looks to have spotted a turtle climbing the tree stump below , the detail is fabulous with Tokyo school quality carving in particular his face ,hands and feet with good muscular definition and nicely carved finger and toenails , a good sign of high quality carving .

The colour and condition are great with only minor age related marks and a totally stable old age crack through the base either side of the two character red seal signature tablet,no damage chips or restorations .
