Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art has dated this piece to the 1880s.
Nicely shaped into six segments the gold laquer work is sublime ,with layer upon layer built up over countless hours to create a fine quality bowl , the bowl itself is inset with a metal liner and then fitted with a solid silver shaped lip in which snugly sits the pierced and shaped cast solid silver lid .

The silver requires cleaning if you choose but personally we would leave it as is , the laquer is great with minimal wear (see photos), there is a rather unusual round spot not laquered but original and even painted around , it may have had a signature tablet attached ? we will never know but it is gorgeous !!
