Lovely 19th Century Hand Carved Mother of Pearl and Leather Coin Purse.

19th century
Description

Very striking 19th century hand carved lustrous mother of pearl and leather expanding purse with intricately carved Renaissance scene on front plaque of a female musician playing the mandolin to accompany a male singer, while both of them read music from a duet music stand. They stand on what appears to be an elaborately decorated stage with thick curtains pulled back with tassels. The reverse of the purse is a plain mother of pearl plaque. Under the mother of pearl is a leather covered metal frame.

The purse opens to reveal crimson silk lined compartments.

It is hinged on bottom, and closes with a tightly sprung push button catch.

Size-3 inches wide by 2 5/8 inches high by .5 inches deep closed.

Weight-60 grams without wrapping.

A beautiful little purse in very good condition for its age, with the exception of some losses to the pierced scalloped border around the front plaque as seen in photos.

A lovely object for a collection with beautiful colour and patina.

Due to the musical theme, it might also be nice as a gift to someone who is musically inclined.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These small decorative pouches and pocket accessories were produced during the nineteenth century, designed to store coins and personal items while displaying carved nacre shell panels.

Craftsmen typically combined hand-carved mother of pearl nacre shell plates with leather linings, brass or silver frames, and accordion-folded leather or silk gussets.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved or engraved nacre displaying natural iridescence, along with hand-stitched leather compartments and period-appropriate metal fastenings.

Display the accessory flat beneath a glass cloche, mounted within a custom shadow box, or arranged as part of a curio collection on a sideboard or tray.

Keep the object away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent the nacre from separating and the leather from drying or cracking.
