A Massive Folk Art Ship in a Bottle Diorama

1920 - 1940
Description

This fabulous highly detailed folk art ship in a bottle diorama has been meticulously built in a very large three pint promotional spirit bottle.

It shows an English four mast ship anchored in a Continental coastal harbour behind which there is an incredible array of three dimensional buildings, some quite grand and others mere cottages, over twenty five in total.

The buildings are set onto a steep hillside dotted with trees.

In the neck of the bottle there is a continuation of the scene with a lighthouse and several cottages, the front one having a fenced garden.

From the neck of the bottle there are detailed steps that lead down to the sea in between rocks.

The ship has its original ebonised wooden stand which nicely displays this unique piece.

This is one of the best and most complicated ship in a bottle dioramas that I have seen and offered for sale.

The interior of these bottles including the ship and landscape are all handmade in wood, paper and plaster which have been modelled, assembled, constructed and hand painted through the restricted neck of the bottle.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Machine-moulded glass bottle with a stippled base rim: commercial production of the period.
Brightly painted plaster and wood elements: consistent with 1930s folk art.
Intricate string rigging and carved details: traditional hobbyist's work.
Cork stopper bound with rope: typical finishing touch for this craft.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

This English maritime folk art diorama from circa 1930 comprises a handmade model built inside a large glass spirit bottle, measuring 17 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. The construction incorporates wood, paper, and plaster, detailed with multicoloured hand-painted elements including a blue sea, green hillsides, and a red-hulled four-masted sailing vessel. The interior scene features over twenty-five three-dimensional buildings set against a steep coastal landscape, complete with a lighthouse and cottages in the bottle neck alongside detailed steps leading down towards rocky shores. The neck is sealed with a cork secured by coiled ropework, and the entire vessel rests horizontally on a tailored black ebonised wooden display stand with angled supports. Display this piece upon a mantelpiece as a decorative coastal maritime accent in a study or living area.

Ships in bottles are a form of maritime folk art created primarily by sailors during long sea voyages from the nineteenth century onwards. Craftsmen built miniaturised vessels and coastal scenes using scrap materials to pass time while at sea.

Traditional bottle dioramas utilise glass bottles, carved offcuts of wood, thread for rigging, clay or putty for sea modelling, and painted paper or wood for coastal structures. The cork is frequently secured with hand-tied ropework.

Authentic vintage examples display age-appropriate patination, hand-carved wood components, cotton thread rigging, and hand-painted elements. The glass bottle often shows imperfections such as air bubbles or pontil marks from historical manufacturing processes.

Position the piece on a wooden mantelpiece, shelf, or sideboard to create a focused display. Pair it with architectural drawings, books, or brass accessories to complement nautical and coastal design schemes.

Dust the exterior glass surface regularly using a soft microfibre cloth. Keep the item out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading of the interior painted elements, and avoid introducing moisture into the sealed neck.
