This Georgian dining table dates from 1750 and is made from mahogany with a dark mahogany brown polished grain finish. The piece takes the form of a circular drop-leaf top supported by cabriole legs that terminate in pad feet. The wood displays varied natural grain patterns across the leaves and centre sections, highlighting the rich tones of the timber. Measuring 74 cm high, this table provides a practical surface for everyday dining and hosting guests in a kitchen, dining room, or living space. The drop-leaf mechanism permits flexible placement against a wall or fully opened for meals, blending traditional English country house style with daily utility in a modern home.

FAQs

Georgian mahogany dining tables originated in 18th-century Britain, characterised by dense imported timber, balanced proportions, and functional elements such as drop-leaf mechanisms or cabriole legs.

Authentic period pieces feature solid mahogany timber, hand-carved legs ending in pad or ball-and-claw feet, and mortise-and-tenon frame joinery secured with wooden pegs.

Authenticity is indicated by signs of hand-planing on the underside, period-correct iron hinges on drop-leaf joints, natural wood shrinkage across the top, and genuine age patination on the lower legs.

Pairing dark mahogany wood with contemporary mid-century chairs or upholstered seating creates visual balance between historic timber and clean modern lines.

Regular dusting with a dry microfibre cloth followed by an annual application of high-grade beeswax protects the polish and prevents wood from drying out.
