Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Staved coopered construction: traditional tub-making methods of the period.
Rolled brass hoops with soft tarnishing: typical turn-of-the-century decorative metalwork.
Interior timber shows dry oxidisation: consistent with unsealed wood over decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Coopered barrels and tubs have been constructed for centuries using fitted wooden staves held under tension by metal bands. Historically utilised for shipping, storage, and liquid containment, brass-bound versions were often crafted for domestic use, naval ships, or upscale commercial display.

These items are constructed from shaped timber staves, such as oak, teak, or mahogany, tapered precisely to form a curved profile. Flat brass bands are wrapped tightly around the exterior staves and secured with metallic fasteners to maintain structural integrity.

Authentic coopered items display hand-planed interior staves, subtle irregularities in stave width, and historical oxidation on the brass straps. Look for aged timber grain and joinery that relies on precise angles rather than modern synthetic adhesives.

Coopered wooden barrels function effectively as umbrella or stick stands in an entryway, decorative planters for indoor greenery, or low occasional side tables when topped with protective glass.

Maintain the timber staves by applying a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain to prevent drying out. Clean the brass straps with a soft cloth, opting to leave natural tarnish intact or polishing gently with a dedicated metal cleaner.
