This Victorian needlework sampler comes in an original birds-eye maple wood frame with old glass. Hand-stitched with cream, terracotta, red, and green wool on a linen ground, the busy design incorporates floral motifs, birds, an octagonal geometric border, and a biblical verse from Ecclesiastes, complete with the maker name Sarah Ann Marples, Thorne, and the date 1857. The sampler measures 40 cm wide, 47 cm high, and 5 cm deep. Ideal for domestic display, this needlework piece works well hung on a narrow wall space in a living room, hallway, or study to add traditional English country house character to interior schemes.

A needlework sampler is a decorative textile panel produced as a demonstration or study of embroidery techniques, historically created by young women during the 18th and 19th centuries. These panels feature hand-stitched alphabets, religious verses, floral motifs, and geometric borders.

Victorian samplers were predominantly hand-stitched onto a plain woven linen or wool canvas ground using silk, wool, or cotton threads. Framed examples from the 19th century were frequently mounted behind glass using birds eye maple, rosewood, or mahogany mouldings.

Authentic 19th-century samplers display fine hand-stitched detail, subtle irregularities in the linen ground, and age-consistent toning across the fabric and threads. Original pieces frequently feature an embroidered makers name, date, location, and period timber framing.

A framed needlework sampler integrates into traditional or eclectic interior schemes, working well within a curated gallery wall or hung in a hallway alcove. Displaying the artwork alongside period wood furniture enhances warm, heritage aesthetic schemes.

To prevent thread fading and fibre degradation, position the sampler away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Mounting the textile using acid-free board and UV-filtering conservation glass ensures long-term preservation.
