This nineteenth century Chinese tray is made from cinnabar lacquer, wood and red and black lacquer, following Qing Dynasty style with a maximalist wonderland design vibe. The rectangular tray rests on a wooden stand and has a black ground with a central lobed carved relief in red cinnabar lacquer of floral devices. Similar carved panels appear on each of the internal and external canted sides, highlighted in gilt, and each side is pierced with carrying handles. The base is lined in morocco leather, and the tray has a rectangular raised border. Measuring 10 cm high, 61 cm wide and 48 cm deep, this practical piece functions as a decorative serving tray or display element on a sideboard top in a dining room, living area or hallway.

Carved lacquer, incorporating cinnabar mineral pigment to achieve a distinctive red colour, has been produced in China for over a millennium, flourishing notably during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Craftsmen constructed these pieces by applying multiple coats of tree sap lacquer over a wooden core, building up thickness before carving detailed relief motifs into the hardened layers.

Authentic historic pieces feature precise hand-carved relief depth, subtle natural surface wear, visible layering beneath cuts, and age-appropriate patination on the plain lacquered reverse.

Place the tray flat on a sideboard, coffee table, or console surface to anchor smaller decorative objects, or display it vertically on a plate stand as wall-adjacent artwork.

Dust the surface gently with a soft dry cloth, keeping the item away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity fluctuations, and radiator heat sources to prevent cracking or warping.
