Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Turned urn finials on the uprights: classical Edwardian hall furnishing style.
Heavy cast-iron drip pan base: period stability and ballast.
Soft tarnish and mellowing across the brass: decades of domestic handling.
Moulded geometric chevron lip on the base: typical late Victorian decorative casting.

This late Victorian semi-circular stick and umbrella stand is made from tubular brass and cast iron, showing a warm gold and black colour palette. The neo-classical design incorporates upright tubular columns with urn-shaped finials, three internal dividing sections, and a black-painted cast iron base decorated with geometric moulding. It stands 61 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 20 cm deep. Suitable for use in a hallway, vestibule, or porch beside the front door, the piece provides practical storage for walking sticks and umbrellas in a compact footprint. The polished brass surface contrasts with the painted black base, offering a traditional aesthetic suited to an English country house interior.

During the mid-to-late nineteenth century, stick and umbrella stands became essential hall furniture in British homes due to the popularity of walking canes and wet weather gear. Manufacturers crafted decorative metal stands to manage wet umbrellas while displaying walking sticks in grand entryways and vestibules.

Victorian umbrella stands were predominantly constructed using tubular or solid brass frames, cast iron bases, or entirely cast iron structures. Heavy cast iron bases were essential to provide low centre-of-gravity stability and hold removable drip trays for gathering rainwater.

Authentic period pieces feature heavy cast iron base plates to prevent tipping, threaded screw fittings rather than modern pop rivets, and authentic tarnish or oxidisation within the joints. Finials often feature hand-turned detail, and base trays typically display casting marks or geometric relief patterns.

A compact semi-circular stick stand fits neatly flush against an entryway wall or beside a front door console. It pairs effectively with wood panelling, modern coat hooks, and natural stone flooring to create a textured, functional hallway focal point.

Clean brass components with a soft microfiber cloth and a dedicated metal polish if a bright finish is desired, or leave unpolished to preserve natural age patina. Keep the cast iron drip base dry to avoid rust formation, applying a light coat of clear wax periodically to seal the iron.
