Antique William IV Mahogany Library Table C.1830

19th century
Description

A William IV mahogany library table, the solid flame-figured rectangular top with a thumb-moulded edge, set over a frieze with turned pendant drops to each corner and architectural end arches, above twin turned columns carved with pendent leaf collars, raised on moulded trestle bases united by a low turned stretcher and with scroll feet and original concealed castors.

Finished on all elevations and with a particularly shallow footprint, open knee clearance and deliberate omission of frieze drawers, it functions effortlessly for occasional writing while sliding neatly behind a sofa or floating centrally in a study.

Very good antique condition with light surface wear and natural variations in tone consistent with age. Structurally sound and ready to place.

English, circa 1830.

This antique William IV library table dates from circa 1830 and exhibits a dark brown mahogany timber with natural variations in tone and light surface wear. The piece comprises a solid flame-figured rectangular top with a thumb-moulded edge above a frieze fitted with turned pendant drops at each corner and architectural end arches. Twin turned columns carved with pendent leaf collars support the structure, rising from moulded trestle bases united by a low turned stretcher, scroll feet, and original concealed castors. Measuring 74 cm high, 105 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, the shallow footprint, open knee clearance, and lack of frieze drawers make this table suitable for occasional writing, sliding behind a sofa, or placement centrally in a study.

Produced roughly between 1830 and 1837, William IV furniture bridges the transition between classical Regency design and the heavier ornamentation of the early Victorian era. Characterised by robust proportions, bold turnings, carved scrolls, and high-quality dark hardwoods, pieces from this period emphasize architectural silhouette and solid craftsmanship.

High-grade Cuban or West Indian mahogany was the primary wood used for top-tier library tables due to its dense grain and resistance to warping. The construction frequently incorporated solid timber bases, hand-turned supports, blind dovetail joints, and hand-rubbed French polish finishes.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, original turned leg structures, and evidence of hand-tooling on underside surfaces. Looking at the wear patterns on the turned stretchers, dark original patina, and castors or carved feet helps verify period authenticity.

A mahogany library table functions effectively as a focal hall table, sofa table, or compact home office writing desk. Placing modern ceramics or tailored lamps on the surface creates an appealing visual contrast against deep wood tones.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain moisture in the wood finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber movement, drying, or uneven colour fading.
