Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Hand-painted fractional pattern numbers in red enamel: standard early 19th-century Staffordshire factory practice.
Imari palette with pink lustre border: typical colourway of Regency and early Victorian ironstone.
Vent hole inside the finial: early hollow-moulded lid construction.
Gilding rubbed on the rims and handles: wear from two centuries of handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This early 19th-century English Georgian ironstone china tureen, cover, and stand is decorated in an ornate Japanese Imari style pattern featuring cobalt blue, rust red, and white grounds with gilded floral motifs. The footed pedestal bowl sits upon a matching round saucer, while twin scrolled handles rise from the sides and a pointed finial tops the domed lid. The lustrous glaze displays hand-painted floral designs and painter's monograms in underglaze red. Measuring 17 cm high, 19.5 cm wide, and 19.5 cm deep, the set fits neatly on a sideboard top to display decorative flowers or serve as a traditional table accent in an English country house dining room or living space.

Developed in early 19th-century Britain during the Georgian period, ironstone china was designed as a durable, opaque alternative to costly imported Chinese porcelain. Manufacturers created Japan or Imari patterns inspired by traditional Japanese export porcelain from Arita, characterized by bold motifs in cobalt blue, iron red, and gilt accents.

Ironstone china is composed of clay mixed with pulverized flint and slag. The dense ceramic body was hard-fired, glazed, and painted with underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze enamel colors like iron red, often finished with hand-applied gold leaf or liquid gold detailing.

Authentic Georgian ironstone ceramics are heavy for their size and often exhibit slight weight variations or subtle pooling of glaze around handles and bases. Look for impressed or printed maker marks, underglaze blue brushwork, and minor wear to the overglaze gilding consistent with age.

An antique tureen functions as a formal centrepiece on a dining table, sideboard, or kitchen island. Displaying the tureen alongside contemporary glassware or neutral ceramic vessels creates a balanced mix of traditional craft and modern design.

Clean antique ironstone by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent with a soft cloth. Avoid dishwashers, abrasive sponges, or prolonged soaking, as these will cause degradation to overglaze enamels and fragile hand-gilded borders.
