Description

Taxidermy – Fox mask hunt trophy by the celebrated taxidermy firm H. Murray & Son of Carnforth.

A fine example mounted on dark oak shield with engraved plaque carrying the hunt details 'Ullswater Foxhounds, killed Wythburn Jan 29th 1934'. Wythburn of course being near Keswick in the Lake District.

Remains of his large trade label can be found pasted to the verso of the shield.

This taxidermy wall mount represents a fox mask hunt trophy from the British Country House style, dating to 1930. The piece is constructed from fox pelt, timber, and glass, rendered in warm brown tones. The fox features a snarling expression with visible teeth, glass eyes, and is mounted upon a dark wooden shield backplate completed with a moulded edge. An engraved metal plaque sits at the base bearing hunt details, complemented by visible animal hair texture and taxidermy mounting hardware. Size is not specified, though the compact proportions suit display in interior spaces. Positioning the item above the mantel brings a Highland Hunting Lodge design vibe to rooms such as a study, hallway, or living space. The piece hangs securely against vertical surfaces using standard wall-mounting fixings. Collectors of rural antiques and British field sports memorabilia will find this item appropriate for traditional interior schemes.

A taxidermy fox mask refers to a preserved head-and-neck mount of a red fox, traditionally displayed on a wooden shield backing as a field sports memorial.

Period taxidermists fitted the preserved animal pelt over a modelled core, using glass eyes and set jawwork before mounting the composition onto a polished timber shield.

Authentic trade pieces often feature maker marks, stamped trade labels, or inscribed metal presentation plaques alongside era-appropriate glass eye settings and wooden backboards.

These wall-mounted accents are frequently incorporated into gallery walls, suspended above fireplaces, or integrated into traditional hallway displays.

Keep preserved specimens away from direct sunlight and damp environments, gently dusting the fur along its natural direction with a soft brush.
