These architectural salvage doors originate from the Shanxi region of China and date from the Qing Dynasty around 1890. Constructed from Northern Chinese locust wood or elm, the timber displays a warm brown tone with a prominent vertical grain and visible sun bleaching. The pieces are mounted with hand-beaten iron decoration, including horizontal edge strapping, decorative studs, pin-type hinges, lapped middle closing, and central ring pulls. Measuring 190 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 12 cm deep, the heavy panels are built for substantial structural openings. They suit residential or commercial spaces as statement architectural features, interior room dividers, or decorative wall panels within a rustic farmhouse setting.

Traditional Chinese doors from regions like Shanxi were engineered as defensive and ceremonial entryways for courtyard compounds during the Qing Dynasty. Built to withstand environmental conditions, they featured thick timber construction combined with iron reinforcers and heavy locking mechanisms.

These doors were typically constructed from resilient local hardwoods and softwoods such as elm (ju wood) or locust wood. Construction relied on mortise-and-tenon joinery without metal nails, complemented by hand-forged iron plates, studs, and ring handles for structural reinforcement.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved mortise slots, weathering on exposed wood grain, and hand-forged iron fittings with irregular patination. Oxidisation around iron studs and natural shrinkage lines along the timber planks also indicate genuine period construction.

They are frequently mounted as decorative focal headboards, wall-hung artworks, or repurposed into functional sliding barn-style doors. Designers also integrate them into room dividers or incorporate them directly into contemporary architectural doorways.

Dust the timber regularly with a dry soft cloth and occasionally apply a neutral microcrystalline wax to preserve the wood moisture without darkening the tone. Keep iron fittings free of excessive moisture to prevent active corrosion while maintaining the existing patina.
