This Victorian serveware piece is an English oak salad bowl dating from 1890, produced by Daniel & Arter in the Highland hunting lodge style. The dark brown timber bowl features a smooth turned finish and rests on a raised foot with a silver-plated rim, while the exterior incorporates cast silver-plated stag head handles with detailed horns, a central vacant silver-plated shield mount, and a smooth silver-plated top rim. Inside, the bowl has a fixed white ceramic lining, and it is accompanied by a matching pair of wooden serving spoons with silver-plated stems. The total diameter including the handles measures 35 cm. Practical for everyday use, this serving dish functions well on a dining table or sideboard top for holding fruit, nuts, or salad, or simply as a decorative display object. The two servers rest inside the bowl alongside one another, with their polished wooden handles projecting upwards and outwards. The construction combines traditional woodwork with decorative metal hardware, presenting a classic late nineteenth-century tableware design suitable for traditional home settings.

FAQs

Popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, silver-mounted oak bowls were crafted in Britain as sporting trophies, commemorative gifts, or decorative serveware for dining rooms in country estates.

These vessels feature a turned solid oak body fitted with electroplated nickel silver mounts, decorative cast handles, and a drop-in ceramic liner designed to protect the timber from liquids and food acids.

Authentic period examples feature EPNS maker stamps or trade hallmarks on the silver collar, detailed metal casting such as animal motifs, and natural age patination on the turned oak body.

Display the bowl as a central focal point on a sideboard, kitchen island, or dining table to introduce warm timber tones and historical metalwork into modern decorative schemes.

Wash the removable ceramic liner separately with mild detergent, clean silver elements using a soft cloth and specialist silver polish, and condition the oak exterior using a natural beeswax compound.
