A pair of English Regency wine coasters sits on a white surface next to a wooden cabinet with brass hinges. These cylindrical papier-mâché vessels display a black japanned finish with gold paint, taking a circular form with raised rims. Hand-painted botanical motifs and dragonfly designs adorn the exterior walls in gold and brown tones, complemented by gilded trim along the top edges. The pieces exhibit gentle surface wear and minor rubbing to the painted decoration. Each coaster measures 4.5 cm high and 13.5 cm wide. These accessories function as tabletop accents in a modern dining room or living space. They sit atop a sideboard, console table, or dining surface to hold small items such as keys, coins, or decorative trinkets. The compact footprint fits neatly into traditional or eclectic interior schemes alongside wooden furniture and metallic hardware. Collectors of Regency decorative arts use them to bring historical detail and black and gold colour accents into everyday living areas.

FAQs

Regency wine coasters were designed in early 19th-century Britain to allow wine bottles to move across polished dining tables without scratching surfaces. They frequently featured papier-mache, turned wood, or silver construction decorated with japanned lacquer or gilded patterns.

Papier-mache coasters were formed by pressing layers of paper pulp or sheets with adhesive into moulds, which were baked and hardened. Artisans then applied multiple coats of dark lacquera process termed japanningand added hand-painted gilding or powdered metallic foliage designs.

Authentic period examples typically exhibit fine craquelure or light crackling within the lacquered surface due to age, alongside wear patterns on internal bases where bottle bottoms sat. Original pieces showcase hand-applied gilding rather than modern transfer printing.

A pair of antique coasters can be placed on a dining sideboard, modern bar cart, or coffee table to hold decanters or glass pillars. Their dark tones and gilt accents provide visual contrast against light wood, marble, or polished stone surfaces.

Dust surfaces gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth, keeping the objects away from direct moisture, heat sources, and strong sunlight. Chemical solvents, abrasive creams, and household polishes must be avoided to prevent stripping the varnish and gilded detailing.
