Antique Early Metalware 18thc Adjustable Iron Six Pronged Lark Spit / Toaster with Unusual Rolled Feet. English C1760-80

18th century
Description

One of the best examples of an 18thc iron lark spit /toaster, I have purchased....it is in very good condition with six double spits, which can be raised or lowered, depending on the height of the down-hearth fire....it has an attractive round shaped finial, but what really pleases me, are the unusual "rolled" feet, I have not seen this design of foot on any examples before....in very good condition.

English. C1760-70.

This Georgian period wrought iron lark spit and toaster is an eighteenth-century hearth equipment piece with a dark grey colour and a rustic farmhouse design vibe. It stands upon a tripod base with unusual rolled feet, supporting a central vertical stem with an adjustable height slide. Six pointed prongs project from the adjustable frame for roasting small birds or toasting food near the hearth fire, and a round-shaped finial tops the vertical shaft. The entire item measures 63 cm high, 30.5 cm wide, and 30.5 cm deep. Today, this piece serves as a decorative historic accent for a fireplace hearth or as an interesting display item on a mantelpiece in a traditional home interior. The dark iron finish shows authentic aged texture from centuries of use near open fires. Collectors of early metalware will appreciate the unusual foot design and the functional mechanical sliding mechanism that remains intact on the central upright stem.

A lark spit toaster is an eighteenth-century hearth utensil designed to hold small birds, bread, or meats near an open fire. It typically features a vertical iron stem on a tripod base with a sliding frame fitted with prongs to adjust the cooking height relative to the embers.

Eighteenth-century hearth utensils were primarily hand-forged from wrought iron by local blacksmiths. The material was chosen for its durability, resistance to high open-fire temperatures, and malleability, which permitted functional elements such as friction slides and formed feet.

Authentic period wrought iron displays subtle irregularities from hand hammering, hand-cut rivets or sliding collars, and surface oxidisation or patina consistent with age. Joints were typically fire-welded or riveted rather than modern-welded, and decorative details like rolled feet show hand tooling.

An antique iron lark spit serves as a sculptural decorative object when displayed alongside a fireplace hearth or placed within a chimney breast alcove. It can also be displayed on a rustic console table or kitchen dresser to complement rustic, traditional, or eclectic interior schemes.

Wrought iron metalware should be kept in a dry environment to prevent corrosion. Dust regularly with a soft cloth or brush, and periodically apply a light coat of microcrystalline wax or natural beeswax to protect the surface and maintain the dark iron finish without damaging the original patina.
