This Georgian occasional table, dating from the eighteenth century, functions as a wine table and stands at 70 cm high. The piece consists of a circular one-piece tilt top made from warm brown burr yew, displaying tight burrs surrounding a swirling long grain flash through the centre. The structure is supported by a turned oak central column and a tripod base with fruitwood legs terminating in pad feet. In a contemporary home, this piece suits placement at the end of a sofa for resting drinks or small decorative items. The compact design occupies minimal floor space while providing a functional surface that can be tilted when not in use.

FAQs

Originating in the eighteenth century, Georgian tripod tables feature a single turned central pedestal supported by three splayed legs. Burr yew examples utilise timber harvested from abnormal growths on yew trees, highly valued for its densely swirling grain patterns.

Cabinetmakers typically used solid or veneered hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, walnut, and burr yew. Construction involved hand-turned central columns and hand-cut joinery to secure the tripod legs to the central column block.

Authentic eighteenth-century examples exhibit signs of hand-planing on the underside, natural timber shrinkage over time, and hand-cut joinery. The underside of the base often reveals unrefined tool marks and age-related oxidation.

These compact tables function effectively as occasional tables positioned beside armchairs or placed within reading nooks. The rich timber figure creates visual contrast when positioned against neutral contemporary backgrounds or paired with modern upholstered seating.

Dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and periodic application of beeswax polish protects the surface patination. Maintaining stable indoor humidity and positioning the piece away from direct sunlight prevents timber movement or veneer lifting.
