This early Victorian writing table is constructed from mahogany with a rich brown timber colour, white porcelain knobs, and dark castors. The piece takes the form of a rectangular desk measuring 114.5 cm wide, 49 cm deep, and 78.5 cm high, equipped with three frieze drawers across the front. The design incorporates boldly turned baluster end supports, a ring-turned central stretcher, and shaped platform bases with bun feet. In a modern interior, the table serves effectively as a compact desk in a home office, a writing station in a study, or a console table in a hallway or living room. The woodwork exhibits a figured grain, and the drawers provide practical storage space for stationery and small items while maintaining a traditional aesthetic.

FAQs

Originating during the reign of Queen Victoria between 1837 and 1901, these tables were designed for personal correspondence, typically featuring turned timber legs, frieze drawers for stationery, and solid hardwood construction.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, utilizing hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer boxes and hand-turned baluster legs supported by castors.

Authentic pieces display period construction marks, such as hand-sawn drawer linings, original brass or ceramic castors, dovetail jointing inside drawers, and light operational wear consistent with age.

Position the table as a functional focal point in a study or quiet corner, pairing it with modern minimalist seating or an upholstered chair to create a balanced, eclectic workspace.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement.
