This George III Sheraton writing table dates from the early nineteenth century and is constructed from honey-yellow satinwood with rosewood and brass. The rectangular top has dark wood crossbanding, while the single frieze drawer features a diamond-shaped black escutcheon and ebony line inlay. A pull-up yellow silk privacy screen is positioned at the back, and the square tapered legs terminate in brass castors. The table measures 55 cm wide, 49.5 cm deep and 76 cm high. Suitable for placement in the centre of a room, this writing table functions well as a decorative desk in a study or a living area. The finished sides allow for freestanding placement, providing a compact surface for writing tasks while offering storage compartments within the drawer interior and a concealed pull-out slide.

Sheraton style furniture from the George III period is characterised by simple geometric forms, slender proportions, and fine veneer work such as satinwood and marquetry. Named after designer Thomas Sheraton, the style emphasises straight lines, square tapered legs, and subtle neoclassical decorative features.

These tables were constructed using light-toned satinwood for the primary surfaces, often complemented by rosewood or tulipwood crossbanding and ebony line inlay. Secondary woods such as pine or oak were used for drawer linings, with cast brass for hardware and castors.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed secondary timbers, and natural patination on the timber and metal fittings. The thickness and slight irregularity of hand-cut veneers, rather than uniform machine-cut veneers, also indicate period construction.

A Georgian satinwood writing table functions as a refined accent piece in a study, hallway, or living room. Positioning it against a neutral wall highlights the natural figure of the wood, while pairing it with modern lighting creates a balanced contrast between contemporary and historical design.

To preserve satinwood furniture, position it away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent timber movement or fading. Regular dusting with a soft dry cloth and periodic application of a high-grade natural beeswax will maintain the surface finish.
