Description

16th-Century Chinese Kraak Porcelain Charger – Wanli Period - Blue and White

Brief Description:

This is a superb Chinese blue-and-white porcelain charger, dating from the late 16th century during the Ming Dynasty, Wanli period (1573–1620).

The charger is decorated in the classic Kraak porcelain manner, with a central shaped medallion containing freely painted flowering branches and foliage, surrounded by a broad border divided into radiating panels. These alternate between stylised floral sprays, auspicious motifs and geometric ornament, all executed in varying tones of underglaze cobalt blue.

The reverse is also decorated in underglaze blue with characteristic loose circular and linear motifs around the underside of the rim. At the same time, the large unglazed foot shows the natural signs of considerable age and manufacture.

This 16th-century Chinese Kraak porcelain charger dates from the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty and is finished in cobalt blue underglaze. The circular dish has a foliate rim and measures 5 cm high, 30.9 cm wide, and 30.9 cm deep. The design features a central shaped medallion with freely painted flowering branches and foliage, surrounded by a broad border divided into radiating panels that alternate between stylised floral sprays, auspicious motifs, and geometric ornament. The glaze displays varying tones of blue, and the piece shows a repair on the left side alongside natural signs of age on the unglazed foot. It serves as a decorative display dish suitable for placement on a sideboard top in an English country house interior.

Kraak porcelain is a style of Chinese export blue-and-white ceramic produced during the late Ming Dynasty, particularly during the Wanli period (15731620). It was crafted primarily for European markets and is distinguished by radiating segmented panels around a central motif.

Kraak ware was constructed using kaolin porcelain clay, decorated with painted cobalt blue underglaze designs, and finished with a clear glaze before being high-fired in kilns.

Authentic pieces frequently exhibit characteristic features such as thin mould-moulded bodies, kiln grit adhesion on the foot rim, glaze flaking along the rim edge, and radial chatter marks on the reverse from wheel trimming.

A porcelain charger can be displayed on a brass stand atop a sideboard, incorporated into a symmetrical wall plaque display, or housed within a glass cabinet to add historical contrast to contemporary furnishings.

Clean porcelain gently using warm water and a mild non-abrasive soap with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid chemical solvents, scouring pads, and extreme thermal variation, ensuring wall mounts feature cushioned contact points.
