Lovely Chinese Painted Boy Bamboo Rice Carrier Wedding Food Basket Qing C.1890

19th century
Description

A wonderfully decorative antique Chinese painted wooden and bamboo food carrier, believed to date from the late Qing to early Republic period, circa 1890.

Traditionally constructed with three stacking sections, including the fitted lid, the carrier features a tall arched bamboo carrying frame with a bound hand grip, reinforced rims and attractive original-style painted decoration.

The exterior retains a rich reddish-brown finish with extensive hand-painted designs in black and golden-yellow tones. Particularly charming is the circular lid, decorated with a standing young boy in traditional Chinese clothing, surrounded by a landscape with trees and foliage.

The sides feature beautifully illustrated songbirds perched amongst flowering branches, goldfish swimming amongst aquatic plants, stylised flowers and further traditional Chinese motifs.

Both sides of the carrying frame display vertical Chinese calligraphic inscriptions, adding further decorative and cultural interest to this appealing example.

Such carriers were traditionally used in China for transporting food, rice, gifts and other provisions. Decorated examples of this type are also commonly described as wedding baskets, reflecting their association with traditional celebrations and ceremonial gift-giving.

The removable sections reveal the original wooden interiors, with visible grain, traditional joined construction and natural irregularities associated with handmade objects.

A particularly attractive piece of Chinese domestic folk art, combining traditional craftsmanship with charming figural, bird, fish and floral decoration.

This Chinese tiered food carrier dates from the Qing Dynasty period around 1890. It is constructed from wood and bamboo with a warm amber finish, featuring an arching bamboo handle with a bound grip, a tiered cylindrical body, and reinforced rims. The circular lid displays a hand-painted black line illustration of a standing boy in a landscape, while the body carries yellow and black painted floral borders, songbirds, branches, and vertical calligraphic inscriptions on the frame. The piece shows surface wear, minor chips, rubbing to the paint, and natural shrinkage cracks reflecting its age and traditional use. The carrier measures 42 cm high by 28 cm wide. It works well placed on top of a sideboard in a living room or hallway as a decorative display piece or storage container.

Traditionally used during the Qing Dynasty, these tiered vessels carried dowry gifts, celebratory food items, and rice during wedding processions and festive family ceremonies.

They were predominantly constructed using woven or bent bamboo, wood, and rattan, often assembled with wood joinery and finished with protective lacquers or hand-painted varnishes.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural patination on timber surfaces, visible age-related wear to hand-painted details, hand-bound bamboo handles, and traditional joinery made without modern steel fasteners.

These tiered containers function as architectural accent pieces on sideboards, kitchen islands, or open shelving, providing organic texture and historical contrast within contemporary spaces.

Maintain the piece by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfiber cloth and keeping it away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and damp environments that cause timber warping.
