CKB Ltd Emporium & Collectables has dated this Chinese Lacquer Rice Basket to the 1900s.
Particularly interesting is the surviving hand-painted carp or koi fish decoration on the lid, with carefully detailed scales, set against an aged black ground surrounded by bold red scrolling motifs. The interior reveals closely worked concentric basketry, probably bamboo or a similar natural fibre, beneath its black lacquered finish.

The second is a substantial rounded wooden rice or storage container, retaining its rich red lacquered finish and fitted wooden lid. Constructed from shaped wooden sections with dark reinforcing bands around the body and foot, the underside displays traditional timber construction with a transverse strengthening batten. The interior retains an attractive naturally aged wooden surface.

Both pieces display appealing traditional craftsmanship and contrasting finishes. Containers of these forms were historically used for storing and transporting food, rice, gifts and ceremonial offerings.

The two containers were acquired together and stack neatly for display, although their differing construction suggests they were originally independent pieces rather than a matched set.
Both are in good antique decorative condition with expected age-related wear. The black and red carrier displays rubbing, fine surface crackling, scratches and wear to its lacquered finish, particularly around the lid, handle and interior. The red wooden container has visible construction joints, age-related splits, minor chips, scratches and wear around the lid and reinforcing bands. Both retain considerable character and attractive aged surfaces.

A charming and substantial pair of traditional Oriental lacquered containers, particularly appealing to collectors of Chinese folk art, antique lacquerware and historic food carriers.
