Chinese Qing Tek Sing Shipwreck Blue & White Bowl 1822 Nagel Provenance Coa

18th century
Description

An authentic Chinese Qing dynasty blue and white porcelain bowl from the celebrated Tek Sing shipwreck cargo, accompanied by its Certificate of Authenticity and retaining the original Nagel Auctions Tek Sing Treasures label to the underside.

The Tek Sing, a large Chinese trading junk, sank in the South China Sea on 6 February 1822 while carrying a substantial cargo of Chinese porcelain. The wreck was rediscovered in 1999, and much of the recovered porcelain was subsequently offered through Nagel Auctions in Stuttgart in November 2000.

This attractive bowl is of traditional tapering circular form with a slightly flared rim and raised circular foot. The exterior is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a traditional Chinese landscape incorporating architectural and natural elements, while the interior is largely undecorated.

The underside retains the distinctive Nagel Auctions Tek Sing Treasures collection label, providing an important connection to the original recovered cargo. The accompanying Certificate of Authenticity, issued by Pineapple Direct Ltd, identifies the piece as a blue and white bowl, reference TS 163.

Condition: The bowl displays characteristic surface wear, discolouration and deposits associated with its history and recovery. There are small chips and irregularities to the rim, together with a fine line visible on the exterior which may represent a hairline crack. Please examine the detailed photographs.

This Chinese Qing dynasty bowl dates from the 18th century and originates from the famous Tek Sing shipwreck cargo of 1822. Fashioned from porcelain, the piece displays a traditional tapering circular form with an everted rim and a raised circular foot rim. The exterior finish carries an underglaze cobalt blue and white landscape decoration depicting architectural and natural motifs. The surface exhibits visible marine glaze wear, small chips and irregularities along the rim, discolouration, and surface deposits alongside a fine line on the exterior. Measuring 7 cm high and 14 cm wide, the bowl comes with documentation including a Certificate of Authenticity and retains its original auction label to the underside. In a modern home, this piece suits placement on a bookshelf in a study or gentleman's library. The item functions well as part of a curated collection of Chinese export ceramics, archaeological porcelain, or maritime antiques. The compact dimensions allow for display within shelving units or cabinet spaces alongside other historical artefacts. The documented shipwreck provenance provides a clear connection to maritime trade history, anchoring the ceramic within traditional oriental design contexts.

Qing dynasty blue and white porcelain is defined by hand-painted cobalt decoration applied to kaolin porcelain bodies beneath a clear glaze prior to firing.

These ceramics were crafted using refined kaolin clay combined with china stone, decorated with mineral cobalt oxide pigment, and fired in dragon kilns at high temperatures.

Tek Sing shipwreck ceramics often show surface mattness or marine encrustation from seawater immersion, alongside official auction inventory numbers or paper certificates of authenticity.

Position these vessels on open shelving, within display cabinets, or atop console tables to create contrast against contemporary minimalist architectural backgrounds.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush and avoid chemical cleaners, immersion in water, or abrasive cloths that could dislodge delicate surface deposits.
