Primitive Antique Early 19th Century Wrought Iron Wall Spike Candle Holder Stabbed Into a Piece of Wood

19th century
Description

A Primitive Antique Early 19th Century Wrought Iron Wall Spike Candle Holder Stabbed Into A Piece Of Heavily Weathered Wood.

It features a simple, hand forged cylindrical socket on an L-shaped arm which shows rusting and heavy pitting from age. The spike is driven directly into the face of a thick, heavily weathered wooden block which shows splits and burn marks.

These wall spikes were a versatile form of lighting that could be hammered straight into barn walls, timber beams, or portable wooden bases.

A beautiful decorative piece.

Condition is good, commensurate with age, use and primitive nature of its structure. The candle spike itself shows signs of rusting and pitting. It is a little loose in the wood. The wooden board backing is heavily weathered, showing both splits and burn marks.

Measures 32cm x 14cm x 14cm

Weighs 1300 grams

This primitive 19th-century lighting piece combines a hand-forged wrought iron candle socket with a thick, weathered dark brown wooden block. The iron component consists of a simple cylindrical socket on an L-shaped arm, displaying heavy rusting and deep pitting across its surface. The pointed iron spike is driven straight into the face of the heavy timber, which exhibits noticeable splits, burn marks, and a deeply textured, rustic grain. The iron holder remains slightly loose within the wood mount, reflecting its utilitarian origins and long history of service. Measuring 32 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 14 cm deep, this compact item fits easily onto surfaces in a home setting. It functions well as a decorative display object in a fireplace alcove or on rustic farmhouse shelving, bringing an authentic historic character to interior spaces.

A primitive spike candle holder, often referred to as a candle spike or miners candlestick, is an early form of functional lighting. It typically features a hand-forged iron candle socket attached to a tapered metal tang designed to be driven directly into timber beams, masonry joints, or portable wooden bases.

These items were crafted by blacksmiths using wrought iron heated in a forge and shaped manually with a hammer and anvil. The socket was rolled from flattened sheet iron, while the pointed spike was drawn out directly from the same piece or forge-welded to the socket stem.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display irregularities consistent with hand blacksmithing, such as visible hammer marks, uneven seam folds on the cylindrical socket, and natural surface oxidisation. The iron often exhibits a layered grain structure when pitted, distinct from modern cast or machine-milled metals.

Primitive ironwork functions well as textural contrast against neutral plaster walls, exposed brickwork, or natural stone surfaces. Placing these objects within a fireplace alcove, on a rustic mantelpiece, or alongside natural timber elements creates an organic, historic focal point.

Keep the piece in a dry indoor environment to prevent active rust formation. Active surface corrosion on the iron can be stabilised using a fine coat of clear microcrystalline wax or natural beeswax applied with a soft brush, which also helps preserve adjacent weathered wood.
