Large (91cm) Antique 18th Century Georgian Ebonised & Giltwood Crucifix, Gothic Statement Piece

18th century
Description

An imposing 18th century Georgian crucifix, standing an impressive 91cm tall and has all the presence of a gothic statement object. Traditionally painted black with contrasting gilded details, the substantial wooden cross is finished with turned finials to each arm and a particularly characterful cartouche bearing the sacred initials INRI.

The original figure of Christ, which would have been pinned to the front of the cross, is now absent. Rather than detracting from the piece, this gives it an unusually stark and haunting appearance, leaving the beautifully aged cross itself as the focus.

It’s an imposing decorative statement that would feel right at home in a gothic interior.

Condition is decent, commensurate with age and use. Missing it’s Christ and showing signs of age related wear, with chips and cracks, all of which add to its haunting aesthetic.

This imposing eighteenth-century Georgian crucifix stands as a striking statement piece. Fashioned from substantial wood, it is traditionally ebonised in black and enriched with contrasting giltwood details, including spherical finials on each arm, a matching terminal at the apex, and a shaped scroll plaque bearing the sacred initials INRI near the top. The structure features an absent figure of Christ, leaving the stark timber surface exposed, and rests upon a heavy, mould-shaped stepped pedestal base with gilt accents. Signs of age-related wear include surface chips and cracks across the dark finish. The object measures 91 cm high, 37 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, this piece brings a strong Gothic aesthetic to a room. The absence of the corpus creates a minimalist, haunting focal point that suits traditional or eclectic interiors. The durable wooden construction and stepped plinth ensure stable placement on flat surfaces. The historic character shows through the aged patination of the black paint and the worn gilding on the mouldings and finials. It functions purely as a decorative religious antique, adding architectural presence and historical texture to domestic spaces.

During the 18th century, ebonised wooden items were produced across Europe as domestic and ecclesiastical devotional objects. Ebonising involved staining light hardwoods black to emulate expensive imported ebony, often highlighted with gilt details for altar displays.

Georgian crucifixes were typically carved from native hardwoods such as fruitwood, pine, or oak, which were then treated with dark stains or black lacquers. Decorative elements, including finials and INRI plaques, were frequently detailed with gold leaf or metal alloys.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural shrinkage, slight warping along wood grain lines, and uneven hand-carved proportions. The finish typically displays age-appropriate crazing, paint loss, and wear where the underlying natural timber shows through the ebonised layer.

Large altar crosses function as architectural focal points when placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or deep window sill. They pair effectively with dark academia aesthetics, minimalist stone backdrops, or grouped antique displays.

Clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft bristle brush to remove dust from carved details. Avoid water, spirit-based cleaners, and commercial polishes, which can strip historic ebonised stains or dissolve delicate leaf gilding.
