This Elizabethan wrought iron lock plate dates from the late 16th to early 17th century, specifically between 1558 and 1603. The dark brown piece displays distinct period details including trefoil cresting at the top, hand-forged rivets scattered across the surface, a projecting key barrel angled upwards near the centre, and an L-shaped base plate. Heavy oxidation, pitting, and rough surface textures cover the ironwork, alongside a small hole near the upper finial and lateral fixing apertures. The lock plate measures 24 cm high, 11.5 cm wide, and 3.5 cm deep. It stands upright on its own base for display on a shelf, mantelpiece, or desk within a study or living area.

Iron locks from the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras were individually hand-forged by blacksmiths to secure coffer chests, entry doors, and cabinets. They feature hand-cut metal plates, raised key barrels, and decorative crests such as trefoils or fleur-de-lis motifs.

These locks were crafted from wrought iron using traditional blacksmithing techniques, including hand-hammering, chiselling, and riveting. Key components, such as the internal wards and key pipe, were fitted manually without modern standardized machine threads.

Authentic period ironwork displays slight surface irregularities, visible hammer marks, and hand-cut edges. Original pieces exhibit age-consistent surface oxidisation and hand-hammered rivets rather than uniform modern machine fasteners.

Early ironwork can be displayed on a bespoke metal stand, mounted inside a glass shadow box frame, or integrated directly into custom period-style cabinetry and timber doors.

To prevent active corrosion, store iron fittings in a dry, humidity-controlled environment. Dust gently with a soft brush and apply a thin coating of neutral microcrystalline wax to protect the surface patina without using abrasive rust-removal chemicals.
