Mid 19thc Anglo Indian Padouk Circular Tilt Top Occasional Table, Probably from the Bombay Region

19th century
Description

A mid 19th century (circa 1860) Anglo Indian padouk carved circular tilt top occasional table, probably from the Bombay region.

This table consists of a solid circular padouk top of fine, faded patina with carved foliate edge leading down to a carved frieze with circular roundels with flower design and scrolling foliage with a carved gadroon design below, the top can either be secured down or tilted up.

This leads down to the turned and carved central baluster column with scrolling acanthus and foliate carved decoration.

The table is supported on a tri-form base with carved foliate decoration with carved foliate apron below terminating on turned and carved bun feet.

This style of table and foliate leaf carving is typically found on pieces of furniture from the Bombay region of India dating to around 1850-1860.

A very similar larger example of this design of table can be seen in the book 'Furniture From British India & Ceylon' by Amin Jaffer on page 342, Fig. 137 which shows a table from an original photograph taken in the Reception Room in the Zanzibar Agency 1865-1869 - this was probably the American Consul's residence in Zanzibar, it appears that Anglo Indian furniture was readily available in Zanzibar and Kenya at this time as Indian carvers were working on the East coast of Africa as well as in their homeland.

This table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home and would make a very versatile addition to any interior!

This mid nineteenth century Anglo Indian occasional table originates from the Bombay region and dates to 1860. Fashioned from warm brown padouk wood with a faded patina, the circular tilt-top surface features a relief foliate rim, a carved frieze with circular roundels and flower designs, scrolling foliage, and a lower gadroon moulding. The mechanism allows the top to secure flat or tilt upward on its central column. The turned and carved central baluster stem displays scrolling acanthus and foliate details above a tripartite base with carved foliate aprons and turned bun feet. Measuring 75 cm high, 54.5 cm wide, and 54.5 cm deep, the table fits neatly into an empty corner or beside seating in a study, library, or drawing room. It functions as a versatile accent surface for lamps or display items while offering flexible placement through its tilting top.

Anglo-Indian furniture refers to items produced in India during British colonial rule, blending classic European utility and shapes with dense native timbers and hand-carved floral or foliate relief work.

Artisans predominantly used native Indian hardwoods such as padouk, rosewood, and teak, chosen for their density, rich grain, and suitability for detailed carving.

Authentic pieces feature heavy, dense timber, hand-carved decorative motifs on the apron and base, traditional joinery, and European forms like tilt-top circular pedestals.

It serves effectively as an accent or side table placed beside a sofa or armchair, bringing texture and historical depth into modern eclectic or classic interiors.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth, applying clear beeswax polish sparingly into the relief carving, and positioning the piece away from direct sunlight or radiators.
