This Edwardian bentwood coat stand dates from circa 1900. Fashioned from dark brown beech, the freestanding piece incorporates steam-bent hooks, a turned central finial, scrollwork loops, and a splayed quadruped base with curved feet. The surface shows a rich dark brown timber colour and natural signs of age. It stands 197 cm high, 70 cm wide, and 42.5 cm deep. Positioned beside the front door in a home today, the stand provides practical storage for coats, hats, and scarves in a hallway or boot room. The slender silhouette suits traditional and country house interiors, offering an organized drop zone for daily outdoor wear as visitors enter the house.

Pioneered in the mid-19th century by Michael Thonet, bentwood manufacturing utilised steam-bending techniques to form beechwood into fluid curves. These freestanding coat stands became common features in entryways during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

These items were crafted using solid beechwood lengths softened with steam and bent around iron moulds. The bent timber components were then secured with wood screws and bolts to create light yet sturdy frames.

Authentic period pieces often feature impressed paper labels or burnt stamps from manufacturers such as Gebruder Thonet or Mundus beneath the structural components. Look for genuine steam-bent joins, turned top finials, and naturally patinated timber surfaces.

Position the coat stand in a hallway, foyer, or dressing room to add functional storage and vertical structure. Contrast its dark curved silhouette against neutral painted walls or patterned wallpaper.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically to protect the timber finish. Keep the stand away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent warping.
