Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Historically, corbels served as structural masonry projections supporting weight above, such as arches or parapets. In Neoclassical and Classical Revival design, decorative plaster versions were created as non-structural ornamental brackets to display sculpture, support mantels, or add classical symmetry to interior architecture.

Plaster corbels are traditionally produced by pouring gypsum plaster into flexible rubber or gelatine moulds, often reinforced with fibrous materials like hessian for structural integrity. Once set, the intricate details are hand-finished to ensure sharp relief on elements such as foliage, masks, and geometric borders.

Authentic plaster corbels often exhibit age-related features such as subtle surface craquelure, seam marks from original multi-piece moulds, and multi-layered patina. Examining the back reveals fibrous reinforcement materials and manual plaster hand-trowelling typical of traditional plaster workshops.

Architectural corbels can be mounted directly on wall spaces to frame a doorway, flank a mirror, or support a floating mantle shelf. They also function well as standalone sculptural wall art above sideboards or within hallway alcoves.

Plaster should be dusted regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or a low-powered vacuum cleaner with a soft attachment. Avoid liquid cleaners or damp cloths on unsealed plaster, as moisture can dissolve or discolour the porous surface.
