For Sale by M Lees and Sons
Description

Large late C19th / early C20th polished ‘blonde’ Arrau or Amazonian River turtle shell carapace ( Podocnemis Expansa or Testudine )

Of good large scale and proportions with a highly-polished ‘blonde’ lustre and patina to the smooth surface. In excellent original condition with no damage or repairs.

Found mainly in South America and the Amazon basin , this species of turtles have been located as far away as Trinidad.

*Turtle shells such as these were historically worked by Western sailors, who having caught the turtles as a source of fresh meat whilst at sea , then stripped the outer layers of the surplus shell and polished the bone carapace to a high lustre in order to sell them as prized and exotic natural wonders of the world , on their return to port.

This natural history specimen is a late 19th-century Arrau or Amazonian River turtle shell carapace, shaped in a domed oval form measuring 62 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 25 cm deep. The piece is fashioned from bone and keratin with a polished blonde and cream finish, displaying natural bone crazing and distinct geometric scute sutures across its smooth surface. The exterior exhibits mottled brown staining, darkened central seams, and natural surface variations along the outer rim. Created in the Victorian natural history style, this artefact fits well in a gentleman's library setting, positioned above a sideboard for display. The solid structural form requires no assembly and presents a smooth, rounded edge profile with characteristic biological growth rings and plate divisions visible across the entire convex face.

During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, natural history collectors and scholars frequently preserved biological carapaces for display in cabinets of curiosities, research institutions, and private collections as symbols of natural exploration.

A turtle carapace consists predominantly of fused bony plates known as osteoderms, covered externally by keratinous scutes that form distinct geometric patterns.

Authentic natural shells exhibit irregular organic growth lines, fine surface crazing, unique scute suture patterns, and structural porosity visible along the interior bone matrix.

These structural natural forms can be mounted as focal wall art above a console table or styled upright on a deep bookshelf within a library setting.

Keep the carapace away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent cracking, dusting gently with a soft dry microfibre cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
