This early 19th-century Georgian cricket tavern table is an English country occasional table made from pine and oak with a brass-bound rim. The piece displays a warm brown original dark finish on its thick circular plank top, triangular apron, and three well-turned legs with ball feet. Useful everyday details include small round fixings securing the brass edge and visible grain variation across the wooden surfaces. Measuring 75 cm in height, 77 cm in width, and 77 cm in depth, the table suits a rustic farmhouse kitchen or serves as an accent piece beside a sofa. It provides a sturdy platform for lamps or drinks in a living room, hallway, or study.

FAQs

A cricket table is a traditional British three-legged circular table designed primarily for use in taverns and cottages from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries. The three-leg arrangement ensured the table remained stable on uneven stone or flagstone floors.

These tables were typically crafted from native British timbers such as oak, pine, elm, or fruitwood, often featuring pegged joinery, turned legs, and occasionally metal bindings like brass around the tabletop rim to protect against wear.

Authentic period examples display signs of genuine age, including uneven wear around the lower legs or stretchers, hand-cut joinery, historical timber shrinkage across planked tops, and original surface oxidation or patina.

A cricket table works effectively as a versatile occasional table, side table beside an armchair or sofa, or as an accent table in a hallway, bringing warmth and historical interest to both contemporary and period schemes.

Maintain the timber by regularly dusting with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Avoid placing the table near direct heat sources or damp environments, and clean metal rims gently without abrasive chemical cleaners.
