This nineteenth-century wall corbel dates from around 1850 in a Victorian Neo-Classical style. Formed from off-white plaster and composition stone, the piece features a carved winged putto head above an acanthus leaf support and a hexagonal upper block, displaying fine surface craquelure alongside structural repairs using traditional French plaster and hessian. The untouched exterior shows aged weathering and minor fissures, while the reverse incorporates internal reinforcement. Measuring 56 cm high by 21 cm wide and 15 cm deep, this structural wall bracket is suited for interior display as an architectural ornament mounted on a wall. It can be integrated into hallway spaces, living rooms, or study areas to support display items or function as a standalone decorative element within a domestic setting.

A putto wall corbel is a structural or decorative bracket projecting from a wall, featuring the carved face or figure of a winged child or cherub. Popularised during the Renaissance and revived throughout the 19th century, these architectural elements traditionally supported mantels, shelves, or cornices.

Traditional corbels were carved from stone, marble, or timber, or cast in plaster, terracotta, and composition materials. They feature detailed hand-carved or moulded relief designs depicting classical motifs, foliate patterns, or figurative elements.

Authentic 19th-century corbels often display characteristic craquelure, surface patination, and minor wear around mounting points or edges. Look for crisp classical carving details, historical casting seams, or remnants of original paint finishes rather than uniform modern resin reproductions.

A classical corbel can be mounted individually as architectural wall sculpture or paired to support a minimalist floating shelf. Placing a corbel in a hallway, alcove, or gallery wall adds texture, historical depth, and classical architectural structure to contemporary interiors.

Dust the corbel regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or vacuum cleaner attachment with low suction. Avoid using liquid cleaning agents or water on porous plaster or stone surfaces, as moisture can compromise fragile finishes and cause deterioration.
