188 X 298cm Mid 19th Century Tekke Turkoman Main Carpet

19th century
For Sale by James Cohen Antique Carpets (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

Apart from the faded old repair running up the middle of this gorgeous old rug, the condition is surprisingly good, with those beautiful, fine flat woven ends. Those are normally the first thing to disappear on these early carpets as they are delicate. The pile height is excellent allover, the structure is supple and the 'handle' is pure joy. Velvety pile, a beautiful collectors item, or for anybody who enjoys quality that can no longer be recreated. These used to trade for multiple thousands of pounds, even in damaged condition, here I am offering a jewel at a great entry level price. Dusty, would benefit from cleaning which I can do but will cost £352.50 inc VAT

6'2" x 9'9" including the kilim ends

Declaration

James Cohen Antique Carpets has dated this Tekke Turkoman Main Carpet to the 1850s.

This mid-nineteenth century Tekke Turkoman main carpet is hand-knotted from wool in a deep red colourway. The field displays repeating geometric Tekke gol motifs enclosed by geometric border bands, complemented by woven flat-weave elem ends. The wool pile is velvety and thick all over, accompanied by a faded old repair running vertically up the middle and a dusty surface finish requiring a professional clean. It measures 188 cm by 298 cm. Display this collectible textile floor covering prominently on the floor of a gentleman's library, a study or a drawing room to anchor the space with traditional tribal pattern and texture.

A Tekke Turkoman main carpet, or haly, was the largest and most valuable textile produced by the nomadic Tekke tribe of Central Asia. These carpets feature repeating octagonal motifs known as gols arranged in a structured grid across a deep red or terracotta field, bordered by intricate geometric bands.

Traditional Turkoman carpets were hand-knotted using locally sourced, hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation. Dyes were derived from natural organic materials such as madder root for reds and indigo for blues, using tight asymmetric knotting techniques that produced a dense, durable pile.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display soft natural dye variations, fine wool pile with a silky sheen, and precise Tekke gols containing specific interior quadrant details. Later commercial reproductions often exhibit chemical dyes, stiffer handles, or standardized machine-like symmetry.

A rich red Turkoman carpet serves as a grounding element in traditional, eclectic, or modern spaces. It pairs effectively with dark wood furniture, neutral linen upholstery, or contemporary minimalist architecture by adding visual texture and warmth.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to prevent pile damage. Professional cleaning should be carried out by specialists experienced in hand-knotted wool textiles using pH-balanced, non-abrasive methods.
