This Sheraton Revival coffee table dates from circa 1890 in the nineteenth century. The piece comprises an oval top in golden brown satinwood, enhanced by rosewood crossbanding, boxwood stringing, and a central dark wood inlaid oval band. The twin trestle base uses burr satinwood with ebony stringing, featuring outward-curving saber legs joined by a lower stretcher. Measuring 50 cm in height, 69 cm in width, and 54 cm in depth, the table provides a practical and aesthetic surface for domestic settings. It suits placement as a central coffee table in a living room, where the decorative timber inlay complements traditional seating arrangements and provides a functional resting place for everyday items.

FAQs

Late Victorian satinwood furniture draws inspiration from 18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite designs, featuring light-coloured fine-grained timber, classical proportions, and delicate crossbanded inlays.

Craftsmen utilised solid hardwoods and fine veneers such as West Indian satinwood, frequently detailing edges with rosewood or tulipwood crossbanding and securing structural joints with mortise-and-tenon construction.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural timber colour variations, hand-cut dovetail or tenon joinery, smooth hand-finished patination, and wear patterns consistent with late 19th-century usage.

Position the table centrally within a modern seating area to allow the warm golden tones and geometric crossbanding to contrast against contemporary textured fabrics.

Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the wood grain while protecting it from direct heat and moisture.
