This early Victorian Staffordshire agateware cheese dome and matching base dish comes from the 1840s. The earthenware body displays a warm brown lead glaze with an intricate marbled agate pattern and vertical fluting across the surface. A detailed pointed finial handle tops the domed lid, which rests inside a circular tray featuring a scalloped rim with matching fluted texturing. The set measures 27 x 23 x 23 cm for the lid and 27 x 27 x 5 cm for the base. Ideal for an English country house interior, this piece sits on a dining room sideboard top to store and present cheese during meals.

Staffordshire agateware is a type of 18th and 19th-century British ceramic produced by combining different coloured clays to create a marbled or veined effect resembling natural agate stone throughout the body of the vessel.

These pieces were crafted using thrown or moulded lead-glazed earthenware, often featuring a deep dish base paired with a fitted, ventilated or solid domed cover to keep cheese at optimal temperature.

Authentic pieces display solid, veined clay bodies running entirely through the ceramic structure rather than surface-painted decoration, often accompanied by period moulding details and hand-turned finials.

A ceramic cheese dome functions as a functional centrepiece on a dining table, kitchen island, or sideboard, offering texture and historical interest within contemporary display settings.

Hand-wash gently using warm water and mild detergent, avoiding prolonged immersion or modern dishwashers that could damage soft early lead glazes.
