This impressive pair of George III Derby porcelain figures, manufactured in England around 1765, depicts recumbent stags resting in front of flowering green bocage trees. Modelled in porcelain and finished with a glossy enamel glaze, each stag reclines upon a naturalistic rock work and grass base. The figures display hand-applied floral sprigs in bright multi-colour tones across the foliage backdrops, alongside subdued naturalistic brown and tan tones on the deer. Spotting highlights the fur, whilst dark glazed hooves and antlers provide contrasting detail against the vibrant green leaves and white blossoms. Measuring 20 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 6 cm deep, these decorative porcelain sculptures suit display upon a mantelpiece within an English Country House interior setting. They offer a refined period accent for a living room or study shelf, adding traditional eighteenth-century craftsmanship to domestic spaces.

Derby porcelain figures from the George III period frequently featured recumbent animals or allegorical figures positioned in front of intricate, hand-modelled floral backgrounds known as bocage. These soft-paste porcelain pieces were decorated using vibrant overglaze enamel colours and gilding, reflecting Rococo design influences.

These figures were constructed from soft-paste porcelain, composed of clay mixed with ground glass or frit to lower the firing temperature. Elements such as leaves and flowers were individually hand-moulded and applied, after which the piece underwent primary firing, glazing, and detailed hand-painting with metallic oxide enamels.

Authentic period Derby pieces often feature unglazed patch marks on the underside of the base where the figure rested on clay pads during firing. Additionally, soft-paste porcelain of this era exhibits a translucent, slightly warm tone under transmitted light and may display minute glaze inconsistencies consistent with 18th-century manufacturing.

Pairings of historical porcelain figures add texture and historic context when placed symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or inside a glass display cabinet. Styling them alongside minimal modern decor or rich timber furniture highlights their detailed craftsmanship without cluttering the space.

Dusting should be performed gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid snagging the fragile leaves and petals. Immersion in water is not recommended as moisture can penetrate hairline cracks or unglazed bases, and chemical cleansers must be avoided to protect the enamel glazes.
