Description

A very nice Worcester porcelain slop bowl, of a good practical size, exceptionally well printed with the "Fence" pattern running around the outside, and a peony spray to the centre. Hand painted tramline border inside the rim and marked with a hatched crescent. c.1775-1780.

It measures 14.6cm (5 3/4") wide and 7.3cm (2 7/8") high.

A slop bowl, also known as a waste bowl, was a standard piece in 18th-century tea services used to collect dregs and cooling water before refilling tea cups. First Period Worcester porcelain refers to wares made during the tenure of founder Dr John Wall between 1751 and 1783.

First Period Worcester porcelain utilised a soft-paste body incorporating soapstone from Cornwall, which reduced cracking under hot liquid. Designs were applied either by hand painting or through underglaze transfer printing using cobalt blue oxide before glazing.

Authentic pieces often exhibit a characteristic greenish or greyish translucency when held to light due to the soapstone formula. They frequently feature factory underglaze blue marks on the base, such as the open crescent, shaded crescent, or workmans marks, alongside crisp moulding and precise transfer patterns.

An antique slop bowl can be styled as a decorative accent on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or inside a glass display cabinet. It functions well individually or grouped alongside other 18th-century ceramics to create a curated decorative vignette.

Care for antique porcelain requires gentle hand washing in warm water using a mild liquid detergent. Dishwashers, abrasive sponges, and sudden temperature fluctuations must be avoided to prevent thermal shock and damage to the glaze or body.
