Antique 18th Century Quality Chippendale Mahogany Tilt-top Tripod Table

18th century
Description

An outstanding Chippendale period mahogany tilt-top tripod table dating to circa 1770 exhibiting the refined proportions, exceptional craftsmanship and elegant detailing associated with Thomas Chippendale and his contemporaries.

The circular top is beautifully carved with a finely shaped scalloped edge — a sophisticated variation on the classic pie-crust form favoured in Chippendale’s Director designs. The quality of the carving, the sharpness of the shaping, and the finesse of the mahogany strongly indicate true 18th-century workshop craftsmanship rather than later interpretation.

The turned central column is superbly executed incorporating a crisply carved spiral-twist section above moulded turnings all set over a well-balanced tripod base. The cabriole legs flow elegantly into pad feet with excellent definition showing the confident controlled carving characteristic of Chippendale-period cabinetmaking.

The table retains its original tilt mechanism and block, and the mahogany has developed a deep, glowing patina that only nearly 250 years of careful handling can produce.

Condition

Excellent period condition with expected wear and patination for its age. Original tilt mechanism functioning smoothly. Structurally sound with superb colour and surface quality.

This 18th-century Chippendale side table dates from around 1770 and follows an English country house style. It is made from dark mahogany with a deep, glowing patina and a smooth polished finish. The circular top has a finely shaped scalloped piecrust rim and rests on a turned baluster column with a spiral-twist section above moulded turnings. The tripod base consists of three cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, and the construction includes an operable tilt-top mechanism. The timber displays rich dark brown and reddish tones across the grain, the legs curve gracefully outward with crisp edge definition, and the circular top shows natural surface variations from handling over time. The table stands 74 cm high with a 70 cm width and 70 cm depth. In a modern interior, this piece serves as a functional display surface or accent table suitable for placement in an empty corner, a hallway, a study, or a drawing room. The circular top provides ample space for lamps, books, or decorative objects, while the compact tripod base allows it to fit easily into smaller residential layouts. When not in use as a conventional table, the top tilts back vertically to save floor space against a wall, making it a versatile addition to traditional or transitional living spaces.

Originating in the 18th century, a Chippendale tilt-top tripod table is a small occasional table designed with a hinged circular top supported by a turned central column and three cabriole legs. The top tilts vertically via a catch mechanism, allowing the piece to be stored flat against a wall when not in use.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid dense mahogany, often featuring hand-carved piecrust or moulded borders. The construction involves hand-turned central balusters, dovetailed legs, and hand-forged iron or brass latch mechanisms beneath the top.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-planed underside surfaces, irregular hand-carved details, original catch blocks with iron or brass hardware, and slight wood shrinkage across the grain of the circular top over time.

An antique tilt-top table can be placed beside a modern armchair as a functional side table or tilted vertically in a room corner or alcove to display the timber grain and carved border as decorative art.

Maintain the timber surface by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a thin coat of natural beeswax polish annually. Avoid positioning the table near direct heat sources, radiators, or damp environments to prevent wood movement.
