This Japanese cloisonne enamel ginger jar dates from the Meiji period around 1880. Constructed from copper and brass with multicoloured enamels, the surface displays an array of white, light blue, light green, red, and yellow tones within elaborate geometric mosaics, floral patterns, and a central bird motif, complemented by a domed, profusely decorated lid. A slight bruise and indentation to the lower side exhibits enamel loss and repair, while the jar is fixed with glue to a dark wooden stand featuring curved feet, with a central hole indicating former lamp use. Standing at 31 cm high by 19.5 cm wide and 19.5 cm deep, this decorative vessel makes an impressive display piece. It sits suitably atop a sideboard in an English Country House setting, adding historical character and rich colour to a traditional interior.

Cloisonne is a traditional enamelling technique where metal strips or wires are attached to a base to create intricate patterns. During the late nineteenth-century Meiji period, Japanese artisans developed advanced enamelling methods to produce vibrant, highly detailed decorative vessels for global markets.

These vessels are built upon a metal base, typically copper or brass. Thin wire strips are applied to form distinct compartments, which are filled with coloured enamel pastes before being fired, smoothed, and polished to a flat, glossy finish.

Authentic Meiji period cloisonne displays fine metal wirework, detailed geometric or nature-inspired imagery, and a ground finish free of synthetic resins. Age-appropriate oxidisation on exposed metal trims and base rims is also characteristic.

A cloisonne jar works well as a focal accent on a sideboard, console table, or within a styled bookcase. Pairing the vibrant pattern with neutral backdrops or dark wood surfaces allows the intricate enamelling to contrast effectively.

Dust the item regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid using liquid cleaners, abrasive polishes, or submerging the piece in water, as moisture can affect raw metal edges or corrode underlying brass and copper bases.
