This William IV period English porcelain plaque, entitled Byron’s Dream, dates to around 1835 in the 19th Century style. The hand-painted enamel scene depicts figures resting among classical ruins with blue sky and green trees, set within an original heavily moulded giltwood frame with ornate repeating patterns. The overall dimensions including the frame are 43 cm in width and 39 cm in depth. Display this wall art piece in a principal reception room or above a sideboard in a study. The warm gold and blue tones complement traditional interiors, while the compact scale makes it suitable for hanging alongside paintings or as an individual focal point on a panelled wall.

English porcelain plaques gained popularity during the early nineteenth century as decorative ceramic panels painted with overglaze enamels and fired multiple times. These items frequently depicted classical subjects, romantic poetry scenes, or landscapes adapted from contemporary oil paintings.

These plaques were formed from hard or soft porcelain paste, glazed, and detailed using vitreous enamel pigments. Once fired, the finished plaques were typically mounted in carved wooden or composition frames finished with gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period pieces display fine brushwork executed in enamel, natural kiln irregularities on the unglazed reverse, and light surface wear consistent with age. Examination of the frame construction and gilding technique also provides evidence of period production.

A framed porcelain plaque can be integrated into a gallery wall display, positioned on a picture easel upon a mantelpiece, or hung individually in a narrow wall space to serve as a focal point.

Dust the ceramic plaque and gilt frame using a dry, soft-bristled brush. Avoid water, damp cloths, and chemical cleansers, as moisture can compromise the gilding and overglaze enamel decoration over time.
